Exchange 2
Overview
This Phlow teaches students how to convert between two currencies using a fixed exchange rate. The example given is £1 = €2. Learners are guided step by step to fill in a conversion table from pounds to euros.
The sequence begins by asking how much £2 Pound Sterling is equal to, reinforcing the idea that every £1 doubles in value to give euros. Students then apply the same rule to other amounts: £4, £3, £6, and £5. At each stage, they are given two possible answers and must choose the correct one, strengthening both their multiplication skills and their understanding of real-world applications of exchange rates.
This Phlow builds confidence in:
- Recognising exchange rates.
- Applying multiplication consistently to convert amounts.
- Working with everyday contexts like money.
By the end, students can confidently complete a currency conversion table using the given rate, preparing them for more complex proportional reasoning problems later.

Prerequisite Knowledge Required
- Understanding of multiplication facts up to 6×.
- Basic concept of money and currency symbols (£, €).
- Familiarity with interpreting “1 equals” statements (unitary relationships).
Main Category
Money / Multiplication / Real-World Maths
Estimated Completion Time
Approx 6-10 seconds per question. 20 questions total. Total time: 2-4 minute.
Cognitive Load / Step Size
Low — single, consistent operation (×2). Visual conversion table reduces memory load and reinforces one-to-one correspondence between pounds and euros.
Language & Literacy Demand
Minimal. Key terms (“exchange rate,” “pounds,” “euros”) are repeated with symbols for clarity. Suitable for learners with low reading fluency.
Clarity & Design
Currency symbols and table format make the task visually intuitive. Clear use of blue for euro values ensures learners can focus on the conversion logic.
Curriculum Alignment
Irish Curriculum – Number Strand (Measures & Money):
- “Use multiplication and division in the context of money, including exchange rates.”
- (Primary Mathematics Curriculum – Measures: Money)
Engagement & Motivation
Real-life context of money and travel creates immediate relevance. Quick, rewarding conversions sustain motivation through visible success and repetition.
Error Opportunities & Misconceptions
- Accidentally adding instead of multiplying.
- Forgetting that conversion applies to every £1.
- Confusing direction of conversion (e.g., euros to pounds instead of pounds to euros).
Transferability / Real-World Anchoring
Directly applies to shopping, budgeting, and travel scenarios. Builds foundational understanding for proportional reasoning and foreign exchange topics at higher levels.
Conceptual vs Procedural Balance
Primarily procedural, but supported by conceptual reinforcement of rate relationships and scaling patterns.
Learning Objectives Addressed
- Apply a fixed exchange rate using multiplication.
- Interpret and complete currency conversion tables.
- Strengthen number fluency through contextual multiplication.
- Relate mathematical reasoning to real-world applications.
What Your Score Says About You
- Less than 5: Review basic multiplication and the concept of “times the rate.”
- 6–7: Understands the pattern but may miss occasional conversions.
- 8–9: Strong fluency with minor attention slips.
- 10/10: Fully confident applying exchange rates and interpreting conversions.
