Multiply 2

Overview

Introduces students to simple multiplication problems with clear visuals. Each screen shows a multiplication question, such as 5 × 3, and learners must select the correct answer from two options.

In the first example, students are asked “What is 5 multiplied by 3?” and must choose between 13 and 15, reinforcing their recall of multiplication facts.

The next example, “What is 2 multiplied by 3?”, offers a choice between 5 and 6, guiding learners to the correct result.

Finally, students answer “What is 2 multiplied by 2?” with the options 3 or 4, solidifying understanding of square numbers as well.

This Phlow builds fluency with multiplication facts in an interactive way, encouraging accuracy and confidence in mental arithmetic.

Multiply 2
Step 1 / 3

Prerequisite Knowledge Required

  • Understanding of addition as repeated counting (see Add 1 and Multiples 2).
  • Familiarity with equal groups and arrays.
  • Knowledge of small number addition facts.

Main Category

Arithmetic / Multiplication

Estimated Completion Time

Approx 6-10 seconds per question. 20 questions total. Total time: 2-4 minute.

Cognitive Load / Step Size

Low — each question isolates one multiplication fact with only two options, supporting focus and quick recall. Gradual variation (2×2, 2×3, 5×3) maintains engagement while reinforcing structure.

Language & Literacy Demand

Minimal — simple, direct wording (“What is 5 multiplied by 3?”). Visual layout and consistent phrasing support learners of all reading levels.

Clarity & Design

Highly clear and consistent. Questions and options are neatly spaced, allowing students to focus on the numbers without visual clutter. Visual balance supports mental processing of multiplication patterns.

Curriculum Alignment

Irish Junior Cycle Mathematics – Number Strand:

  • “Develop and use an understanding of multiplication facts and their application in problem-solving contexts.”

Engagement & Motivation

Quick-fire questions encourage focus and momentum. Learners experience immediate success through accessible problems, promoting confidence and positive reinforcement.

Error Opportunities & Misconceptions

  • Confusing multiplication with addition (e.g., 5×3 vs 5+3).
  • Relying on guesswork instead of pattern recognition or repeated addition.

Transferability / Real-World Anchoring

Foundational skill for topics like area, scaling, and proportional reasoning. Supports everyday problem-solving (e.g., total cost, repeated groups, and combinations).

Conceptual vs Procedural Balance

Primarily procedural — focused on reinforcing factual recall and accuracy, but conceptual understanding is supported through structured examples and clear progression.

Learning Objectives Addressed

  • Recall basic multiplication facts up to 5×5.
  • Strengthen fluency and speed in mental arithmetic.
  • Distinguish multiplication from addition.
  • Build a foundation for higher multiplication and division concepts.

What Your Score Says About You

  • Less than 5: Needs to practise multiplication tables and repeated addition links.
  • 6–7: Understands the operation but may need to strengthen recall speed.
  • 8–9: Accurate and consistent with smaller facts.
  • 10/10: Fully fluent — ready to apply multiplication in problem-solving and larger number contexts.
